  • しかし、村人とても、萬策つきた場合であったから、お籠りさして貰う譯に行かぬなら、雨乞づとめをして下され。 氏神の境内にておつとめして下され。 と、一晝夜退かなかった。But the villagers, having nowhere else to turn, requested that, if they could not be allowed to make a vigil, a Service for Rain be performed, if need be, on the ground of the village shrine, and they refused to leave the Residence for a day and a night (The Life of Oyasama, pp. 186-187).

  • そこで雨乞づとめに出た一同は、ズブ濡れのまま拘引された。At this, all those who participated in the Service for Rain were arrested on the spot soaking wet (The Life of Oyasama, p. 190).
  • 豊かな稔りを得るためには、苗の発育もさることながら、天候のよしあし、なかでも降雨の影響が大きい。「雨乞い」と「雨あずけ」のつとめは、⋯⋯ A rich harvest required the seedlings’ healthy growth, which was heavily affected by weather conditions, particularly rainfall, which is why the Service for Rain and the Service for the Cessation of Rain were taught (Tracing the Model Path, p. 179).
  • 明治16年の夏は、近畿一帯にわたっての大旱魃で、三島村もその例にもれなかった。万策つきた村人達の願いによって、8月15日(陰暦7月13日)「雨乞づとめ」をしたところ、⋯⋯ In the summer of 1883, there was a great drought in the entire Kinki region, and Mishima Village, where Oyasama lived, also, was not unaffected. At the request of the villagers, who had been at their wits’ end, Oyasama’s followers performed the Service for Rain on August 15 (July 13) (A Glossary of Tenrikyo Terms, p. 123).
